Bournemouth's beaches out of season: October to April

Bournemouth's beaches stay open all year, and from October they change character: dogs are back on the sand, the crowds thin, beach huts move to winter hire, and the lifeguards and many kiosks stop. The big seafront cafés and restaurants keep going with shorter hours, so a winter beach day still ends with a hot drink.

Here is what is open, what closes and what the rules are from October to April, checked against BCP Council, the unitary authority for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, and the Bournemouth Guide's out-of-season guide.

When can dogs go on Bournemouth beaches?

From 1 October to 30 April, dogs are allowed on every BCP Council beach. They must be on a lead on promenades, piers, zig zags and footpaths, but can run on the sand. From 1 May to 30 September they are banned from the Blue Flag and Seaside Award beaches, outside the year-round dog zones.

The dates are on BCP Council's page on where and when you can bring your dog to the beach. The same page lists the stretches where dogs are welcome all year, which matter again from May:

• Western Alum Chine to the Branksome Chine beach office
• Middle Chine to Durley Chine
• East of Fisherman's Walk to Southbourne
• Hengistbury Head, Mudeford Sandbank, Gundimore and parts of Friars Cliff and Highcliffe
• Western Sandbanks promenade to Haven Point, and Hamworthy beach

Can you hire a beach hut in winter?

Yes, but not by the day or the week. BCP Council's daily and weekly hut hire runs from 28 March to 25 September 2026. For the winter, the council offers a single fixed period, from 26 September 2026 to 19 March 2027, priced for the whole period. It suits locals and long-stay guests more than a weekend visitor.

Which seafront cafés stay open from October to April?

The larger cafés and restaurants on the promenade stay open through the winter with seasonal hours, while the smaller kiosks close or open only at weekends. The Bournemouth Guide's out-of-season guide says exactly that, so plan a winter walk around the bigger venues and check times on the day.

• Urban Reef on Undercliff Drive, Boscombe, opens daily across three levels, from morning coffee and pastries to evening dining upstairs; hours vary by season.
• WestBeach at Pier Approach is a seafood restaurant with a sun terrace over the bay. Its listing notes that it closes on some weekdays outside summer.
• Rockwater Branksome at Branksome Chine serves an all-day menu from breakfast; its roof terrace and beach shacks keep different, seasonal hours.
• Key West, at the end of Bournemouth Pier, changes its opening times with the season.

At Durley Chine, the eco beach hub at the foot of the chine has a café with toilets and showers. At Fisherman's Walk, Café Riva sits at the top of the zig-zag, per the Bournemouth Guide's Fisherman's Walk listing.

What closes on the seafront in winter?

The lifeguards go first, then the kiosks, the land trains and the cliff lifts. The piers stay open to walk on, but their attractions switch to weekends and school holidays. None of this closes the beach itself: the sand and the seven miles of promenade are open every day.

• Lifeguards. RNLI patrols end after Sunday 27 September 2026 on the last four beaches and do not return until spring. Our guide to sea swimming in autumn and winter covers the safety side.
• Cliff lifts. The Bournemouth Guide says the West Cliff and Fisherman's Walk lifts run from around Easter to the end of October, weather permitting, and the East Cliff Lift has been out of action since the 2016 landslip. • Piers. Bournemouth and Boscombe piers switch their attractions to a weekends-and-school-holidays pattern, according to the guide.
• Kiosks. Seafront kiosks shut or open only at weekends.

The zig-zag paths and the chines stay open, so you can always walk down. Durley Chine has a ramp onto the beach, which helps with a pushchair or a wheelchair.

What is a winter beach day in Bournemouth like?

Quiet, bright and often surprisingly mild. The Bournemouth Guide's winter page and its autumn page describe the seasons month by month. Out of season, the promenade belongs to walkers, runners, cyclists and dogs, and the light over Poole Bay is at its best.

A good winter day starts with a walk along the promenade from the West Cliff to the pier or out to Boscombe, a dog run on the open sand, and lunch at one of the year-round cafés. When the weather turns, the guide notes that the Oceanarium by the pier opens 364 days a year, closing only on Christmas Day, and the Russell-Cotes museum on the East Cliff opens Tuesday to Sunday.
