No Air Festival in 2026: what filled the August gap
The Bournemouth Air Festival did not return in 2026, two years after the council paused it over cost. What replaced it and what is known about a comeback.

For sixteen summers the Bournemouth Air Festival was the biggest weekend of the year on the seafront. It did not happen in 2026, and it was not the first year it was missed. The last festival ran in August 2024; BCP Council then paused the event to protect public funds, saying the net cost of running the show was between £400,000 and £500,000 a year and that it could no longer afford it, as Dorset Guide's summary of the council's position sets out.
The revival that needed a budget
Independent organisers proposed bringing the festival back for 20 to 23 August 2026, but the plan was contingent on raising the entire budget privately through sponsorship and the sale of Air Cards. No festival took place on those dates. The council has said it remains open to proposals for new commercially or independently funded events, and there is no confirmed date for a future festival. Older event websites still list dates for 2026 and beyond; none of them are backed by an announcement.

What August looked like instead
The seafront still had a summer. The Friday Fireworks ran every Friday night at 10pm from 24 July to 28 August, with a bonus finale added for Friday 4 September, according to the town's tourism site. The beach, the pier, the zip wire and the Oceanarium ran their normal season, and the town's hotels reported the usual August. What went missing was the four-day spike of visitors and the television pictures.
The autumn that follows
The irony of 2026 is that the calendar after August is the strongest the town has had. Arts by the Sea fills the Lower Gardens this weekend, the Oktoberfest takes the BIC, Run Bournemouth closes the seafront in October, and AFC Bournemouth's first European season brings four Thursday nights at the Vitality. For a town whose summer was built on one weekend, that is a different kind of year. The events calendar has all of it.
