University Hospitals Dorset runs the Royal Bournemouth Hospital on Castle Lane East and Poole Hospital on Longfleet Road, and both depend on locums, agency nurses and consultants who arrive for a week, a month or a rotation and need somewhere better than a hotel room to come back to after a shift.
The hospital estate is growing
The Royal Bournemouth Hospital's BEACH building, a six-storey block of 23,000 square metres, was completed in early 2025, and its maternity and neonatal unit opened on 31 March 2025, University Hospitals Dorset says. The building brings together an enhanced emergency department, imaging with x-ray and CT, and a 30-bed critical care unit, with children's health services due to relocate into it in early 2026, according to the contractor Sir Robert McAlpine. More services on one site means more staff on rotation, and more of them from outside the area.
What a healthcare stay looks like
- By the night or by the month. A locum covering a fortnight books nightly; a nurse on a three-month contract moves to the monthly all-in rate from 28 nights, which includes electricity, gas, water, wifi, council tax, TV licence, parking and gym access. No agency, no tenancy, no deposit.

- Built for shifts. Self check-in with a code sent before arrival, blackout blinds, a full kitchen for cooking at odd hours, laundry in the apartment or building, and a team on the phone 24 hours a day.

Getting to the hospitals
