Relocating to Bournemouth for work: the soft landing
Moving to Bournemouth for a job: where the employers are, and how to start work first and find a flat second with a monthly serviced apartment and no tenancy.
On this page
A job offer in Bournemouth comes with a question the offer letter does not answer: where do you live for the first three months? Renting from a distance means signing a tenancy on a flat you have seen once, in a neighbourhood you have not walked through, with a deposit and agency fees on top. The alternative is a soft landing: a serviced apartment by the month, with everything included, until you know the town.
Where the work is
Bournemouth's economy is bigger and more varied than its seafront suggests. Twenty-three of the 100 largest privately owned businesses in Dorset are based in the town, and the county's top 100 grew turnover by 6.5% to £5.2bn in the latest year, with average wages up 10.2%, according to Grant Thornton's Dorset LTD 2026 report. The clusters:
- The Lansdowne, by the station, is the office district: the towers, the professional services firms and Bournemouth University's business school.
- The town centre and Boscombe carry the digital and creative firms, spread through the streets behind the seafront.
- The hospitals. University Hospitals Dorset's Royal Bournemouth site, with its new BEACH building, and Poole Hospital; see NHS and healthcare staff accommodation.
- The universities. Bournemouth University and the Arts University Bournemouth on the Talbot campus, back for the new year this week.
- The Aviation Park at Hurn, around the airport that has just had its best ever year.
The soft landing
Stays of 28 nights or more with Flexiestays move to a monthly all-in rate. One figure a month covers the apartment, electricity, gas, water, wifi, council tax, TV licence, parking and gym access. It is a serviced let, not a tenancy: no agency, no assured shorthold tenancy, no six-week deposit. You can extend or shorten with notice, so there is no commitment beyond the first month.
That changes the order of the move. Start work on the Monday. Spend the first month walking the neighbourhoods on weekends. Sign a lease on a flat you have actually stood in. Employers who relocate people regularly put the first month on a company account, invoiced monthly with a named account manager; corporate accommodation in Bournemouth explains how, and the help centre sets out what is included in the monthly rate.
Choosing where to settle
A month on the West Cliff, where the Flexiestays hotels are, puts you within walking distance of the town centre, the beach and Westbourne, which is a fair vantage point for the rest. Westbourne is the village most relocating professionals end up looking at; Southbourne is the family end; Boscombe is the value and the food; Poole and the harbour are twenty minutes west. Where to stay in Bournemouth compares them, and the Bournemouth Guide has a page for each neighbourhood.
